5 Reasons You Need an Engagement Session

Engagement + Couples, Wedding Wednesday

June 25, 2020

Congratulations, you just got engaged! Your loved ones have been called, relationship status updated, and you’re frantically creating your Pinterest boards. And, now it’s time to start wedding planning.

I can tell you as an experienced Dallas Engagement and Wedding Photographer how quickly photographers book. I always stress to potential brides that once your venue is secured, that’s when you should start interviewing and booking your wedding photographer. That truly should be one of the early vendors checks off that mile-long list.

One of the choices you’ll make while choosing a photographer is whether or not you need an engagement session. Like, do you really need one? The answer is yes! While you don’t neeeeeed one, you definitely should have one. And, here are the reasons why.

5 Reasons You Need an Engagement Session

You’re Going to Have Fun!

Engagement photos should number one be fun and let your unique personalities shine through. They don’t need to be in an open field or a local park. They can be personalized to you. One way to personalize your engagement session is to include your pets!

Some questions to think about to brainstorm ways to personalize your engagement session:

Is there a location you’ve always wanted to visit or experience?

Where do you and your fiance like to go together?

Do you have access to a location that is special or unique?

What do you like to do together? Hobbies or activities that you share?Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Plano, TX engagement session - top engagement session locations in Dallas

Allows You to Get Comfortable in Front of the Camera.

A big reason why engagement sessions are so important is it allows you the opportunity to feel at ease in front of the camera. This is especially important with an organically candid style of posing and prompts. When it comes to documentary style, being at ease in front of the camera is paramount. Most of my couples say things like “That was so easy and fun!” or “I thought this was going to be so hard and I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I would be!” Engagement sessions are the perfect opportunity to become more familiar with how being in front of a camera feels, which will allow me as your photographer to capture far more effortless looking images!

Engagement Sessions Make Your Wedding Photos Better!

Think of your engagement session as a trial run for your wedding day. During wedding days, emotions are running high and everyone is watching. It is easy to start to feel somewhat overwhelmed. But, since you’ve had an engagement session which are low pressure with little to no time constraints, you’re a pro now! You’ve had the opportunity to get to know how I pose couples. This allows me to know what poses are natural and work really well for the two of you. Additionally, you will know how to do all the poses I’m asking you to do, which saves us a lot of time! This allows us to get so many more portraits in the same amount of time!

Get to Know Your Photographer.

You’re going to be spending a lot of time with your wedding photographer. I firmly believe that connecting with your photographer on a personal level is such an important aspect of your wedding experience. An engagement session is essentially an in-depth meet and greet. My goal during engagement sessions is to get to know couples betters. What makes you special as a couple? How do you show affection? What prompts and gentle poses are most complimentary to the two of you? It also allows you to know me better so on your wedding day I don’t feel like “the girl” with the camera.

You’ll Have Photos to Use for Wedding Details.

Engagement photos are perfect for personalizing your wedding details. You can use them for Save the Dates, a Sign-in book, a canvas or large framed print at a welcome table, or various images to have in different areas of your wedding venue.

Now that I’ve listed these out, I am even more excited for my upcoming engagement sessions. I hope that I’ve convinced you that engagement photos are such a valuable part of your wedding experience. I can guarantee you’ll never be sorry you made them a priority.
