Outdoor Engagement - Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park, Coto de Caza - Kyrsten Ashay Photography I absolutely love engagement sessions. I’ve said it before and I will say it again–engagement sessions are so important to make your wedding day go smoothly. When I met Krystle + Eric for their wedding consultation they both vocalized how awkward and uncomfortable they felt in front of the camera. I ensured them that it wasn’t about those prom-esque poses with them staring into the soul of my camera lens. It was truly about them having fun and connecting with each other.

Let’s start with some advice, and  by far the most common thing I hear: “I’m not comfortable in front of the camera”. Well, neither am I. I actually hate it. But you know what. We’re going to make it a hell of a good time, crack jokes throughout the session, listen to some music and you’re going to get some amazing photos from it all. Hell, if you still feel uncomfortable, we can even pop of a bottle of champagne or toss back some shots of tequila.

Engagement sessions are less about “being in front of the camera” and more about just having fun and having a great time with one another. That’s the best way I could possibly describe a photo shoot with me as your photographer. Playful. Romantic. Silly. I don’t think anyone has ever explained it as “awkward” or “uncomfortable”.

Now. Why are engagement sessions important? Engagement sessions are not only about getting gorgeous photos to adorn your walls. Think of it as a trial for your wedding day. It helps couples feel comfortable in front of the camera. Engagement sessions allow couples to learn how to “pose”. But most importantly, engagement sessions help couples gain confidence in front of the camera. The engagement session also allows the couple and myself to build a stronger relationship and have some fun together. Because let’s be honest, we’re going to spend a ton of time together. So, how does engagement sessions make your wedding day smoother? All of these combined allows portraits and romantics on the wedding day take less amount of time so you can go enjoy your party because you have confidence in yourself and your photographer.
