Naturally Playful, Completely Magnetic — Samantha + Martin at First Presbyterian & the Winspear Opera House

There is a particular kind of couple that makes a photographer’s job feel less like work and more like witnessing.

Samantha and Martin are that kind of couple.

From the moment we arrived at First Presbyterian Church in the Dallas Farmers Market District, before the session had even properly begun, they were already flirting. Just being themselves, easy and playful and completely magnetic with each other. The kind of natural chemistry that most engagement sessions take an hour to find its way to.

These two arrived with it already in full swing.

What followed was an evening moving through two of the most architecturally extraordinary locations in all of downtown Dallas — from the warm, neutral stonework of First Presbyterian Church to the crystalline reflection pool of the Winspear Opera House — with a couple who took every direction I offered and immediately made it more themselves than I had imagined.

These images are some of my favorites from any engagement session in this city. And Samantha and Martin went on to have one of the most extraordinary destination weddings I have ever documented. But first — Dallas.

Stop One: First Presbyterian Church of Dallas

First Presbyterian Church of Dallas is one of the city’s most beloved architectural landmarks — and one of the most underrepresented engagement session locations in all of DFW.

The church dates back to the late 19th century, though the current sanctuary building was completed in 1941. The exterior is striking in its restraint — warm neutral stonework, clean Gothic revival lines, a scale that commands attention without overwhelming.

What to Know About Photographing at First Presbyterian

First Presbyterian is a public exterior — no photography permit is required to photograph on the surrounding sidewalks and grounds. Additionally, the space is relatively uncrowded during evening hours, which makes it an accessible and low-stress starting point for a session that moves through multiple locations.

The best light on the First Presbyterian exterior arrives in the late afternoon, when the sun is low enough to catch the stonework at a warm angle without washing it out. Plan to arrive at least ninety minutes before sunset for the most flattering exterior light.

Stop Two: The Winspear Opera House

From the sacred stonework of First Presbyterian, we moved to the Winspear.

The AT&T Performing Arts Center’s Winspear Opera House is the work of Norman Foster — the British architect whose buildings have helped define the contemporary architectural skyline of cities from London to Hong Kong. The Winspear sits within the Sammons Park complex, flanked by the Wyly Theatre and surrounded by open plazas that create a generous, breathing space in the middle of the city.

The reflection pool in front of the Winspear is the visual centerpiece of the entire complex — and it is, in our experience, one of the most extraordinary portrait environments in all of downtown Dallas.

The light at the Winspear in the final hour before sunset is genuinely extraordinary. The glass of the building catches the warm tones of the evening sky and throws them back across the plaza in ways that make every surface glow.

What to Know About Photographing at the Winspear

The Winspear reflection pool and plaza are publicly accessible. No photography permit is required for the exterior and plaza areas. However, the complex can become busy on evenings when performances are scheduled — check the AT&T Performing Arts Center calendar before your session date and plan accordingly.

On Samantha and Martin: The Couple Who Made Every Pose Their Own

I want to say something specifically about what it was like to photograph Samantha and Martin — because it is relevant to every couple reading this who worries about how they will look in their engagement photos.

Throughout the session, I gave directions. Placement suggestions, movement prompts, the kinds of structural cues that engagement photography relies on to create compositional variety. What Samantha and Martin did with every single one of those cues was take it and personalize it immediately.

Not a posed version of the direction. Their version. The way they would have naturally held each other, the angle at which Martin would naturally lean toward Samantha, the exact form of playfulness that is specifically theirs and no one else’s.

This is the thing about couples with genuine chemistry: they do not pose. They receive a suggestion and then they exist within it as themselves. As a result, the images look discovered rather than constructed. They look like something that was already happening and a photographer happened to be present for it.

Samantha is naturally expressive and radiantly present. Martin matches her with a warmth and ease that is completely his own. Together, their energy is the specific kind of flirtatious comfort that comes from two people who are genuinely crazy about each other and have stopped pretending to be casual about it.

Put that couple in front of First Presbyterian’s stonework at golden hour and then in front of the Winspear’s reflection pool at dusk — the results speak for themselves.

The Engagement-to-Wedding Arc: From Dallas to Mexico

Samantha and Martin’s downtown Dallas engagement session is one chapter of a visual story that culminated in one of the most extraordinary destination weddings we have ever documented.

They got married at the Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort — a stunning oceanfront property along the Mexican Caribbean where the ceremony took place overlooking the sea and the reception carried the kind of energy that only comes from a community of people who have traveled together to celebrate love.

The contrast between their engagement session and their wedding tells the full story of who they are. Downtown Dallas gave us structure and architecture and urban sophistication. The Dreams Riviera Cancun gave us tropical lushness and ocean light and the particular warmth of a destination celebration.

Both chapters are true. Together, they are complete.

Evening weekdays are ideal. Downtown Dallas is quietest on weekday evenings, particularly between 5pm and 8pm when the lunch crowds have gone and evening performance audiences have not yet arrived.
