There are locations that are beautiful. Then there are locations that are transformative — spaces that do not simply provide a backdrop but actively change the quality of light, the mood of every frame, and the emotional register of everything photographed inside them.
The Armstrong Browning Library at Baylor University in Waco, Texas is the second kind.
We have photographed engagement sessions in downtown Dallas and garden estates and mountain landscapes and European cities and oceanside resorts. We have made images in every kind of light and every kind of setting that Texas and beyond have to offer.
Nothing photographs quite like the Armstrong Browning Library.
When Saira and Faraaz arrived at Armstrong Browning Library on the Baylor campus, we knew within the first few frames that this session was going to be different. Furthermore, Saira and Faraaz — natural, warm, and entirely at ease with each other from the first moment — gave us exactly the couple this location deserved. The result is a gallery that does not look like it was made in Texas in the 21st century. Instead, it looks like something discovered in an archive. Every frame belongs to another era entirely.
This is their story. And it is also an argument for why every couple within driving distance of Waco should be considering the Armstrong Browning Library for their engagement session.
The Armstrong Browning Library sits at 710 Speight Avenue on the Baylor University campus in Waco, Texas — approximately 90 minutes south of Dallas-Fort Worth along I-35.
It was established to house the world’s largest collection of materials related to Victorian poets Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. However, what it became in the process of housing that collection is something far beyond a research archive: one of the most visually extraordinary interior spaces in the entire state of Texas.
The library holds 62 stained glass windows — the largest collection of secular stained glass in the world. Each window was created specifically for this building, depicting scenes from the Brownings’ poetry and life. The glass ranges from delicate to dramatic, from soft amber warmth to deep jewel tones, and it covers the building from floor level to ceiling height in a way that transforms the available light entirely.
Inside the Armstrong Browning Library, there is no such thing as ordinary light. The light that exists here has already passed through colored glass and taken on qualities that natural light alone cannot produce. It is warm and layered and directional in ways that change depending on where you stand and what time of day you arrive.
No flash photography is permitted inside the Armstrong Browning Library. This is a non-negotiable policy to protect the stained glass and the collection.
For couples considering this location, this is the single most important thing to understand before booking your session here: you must hire a photographer who is skilled in available light, low-light, and natural light shooting. A photographer who relies on artificial light to make images look good will be limited significantly inside this building.
We shoot in available light exclusively, and the Armstrong Browning Library is one of the most compelling arguments for why that approach produces better images than flash ever could. However, not every photographer will be equally prepared. Ask your photographer directly before booking this location whether they are comfortable and experienced working in natural and available light conditions without flash.
The Armstrong Browning Library is open to the public during regular hours. Also, there is a $150 photography permit required for personal engagement sessions.
Plan 60 to 90 minutes inside the library. There is enough variety in the interior spaces to sustain a full session without ever stepping outside. Additionally, the Baylor campus surrounding the library provides additional outdoor portrait options.
The library is a working archive. Visitors are welcome, but the space is also an active research facility. Couples and photographers should move through the space with the same respectful awareness they would bring to any cultural institution.

Saira and Faraaz arrived at the Armstrong Browning Library with the ease of two people who have never needed to perform for a camera because they are too busy simply being themselves with each other.
This is the quality that makes certain couples extraordinary to photograph. The session is not about convincing them to look natural. Instead, it is about positioning them within the environment and then allowing what already exists between them to fill the frame.
Their session moved through the library spaces with a rhythm that felt unhurried and completely natural. The prompts we gave them were structural — position, direction, movement — and what they gave back was entirely their own. The ease between them, the glances, the laughter none of it was manufactured.
It was simply them. In a space that happened to be one of the most beautiful locations in the state of Texas.
The result is a gallery that we will carry as a reference for what this library can produce. These are the images we will show couples who ask what the Armstrong Browning Library looks like photographed with intention, with available light, and with a couple who brought their full selves to the session.
It is a fair question. There are extraordinary engagement session locations in Dallas-Fort Worth such as the Dallas Arboretum, Cedar Hill State Park, the Bishop Arts District. We photograph engagement sessions throughout DFW and we love many of those locations deeply.
However, the Armstrong Browning Library offers something that no DFW location can replicate: the specific, layered, cinematic light the stained glass windows create inside a building designed to showcase them.
There is no equivalent in Dallas. There is no equivalent in Fort Worth. In fact, we are not aware of an equivalent engagement session location anywhere in Texas.
For couples who want images that look genuinely different — images that could not have been made anywhere else, that carry the visual signature of a specific, irreplaceable place — I highly recommend the Armstrong Browning Library.
Here is what we want every couple to know before booking a session at the Armstrong Browning Library.
Confirm hours before you go. The library is open to the public but operates on a schedule that can shift around university events, academic calendar breaks, and private events. Check the current schedule at baylor.edu/lib/browning before finalizing your session date.
No flash — and this matters who you hire. As noted above, flash photography is not permitted inside the library. Choose a photographer who is experienced with available light work. Ask specifically. The images from a flash-dependent photographer in this space will not look like what this location is capable of producing.
Wear colors that hold up to the stained glass. The interior light in this space is warm and richly colored. Outfits in neutral, ivory, cream, tones tend to interact beautifully with the stained glass palette.
Allow travel time. From Dallas, plan for approximately 90 minutes to Waco with no traffic. We recommend building buffer time so you arrive relaxed and ready rather than rushing from the highway to the session.
For more location ideas across Dallas-Fort Worth, our best engagement photo locations in Dallas guide covers our full rotation — from downtown Dallas to garden venues to natural landscapes. Additionally, our complete Dallas engagement session guide walks through everything you need to know about planning your session from timeline to outfits to what to expect on the day.
If Saira and Faraaz’s gallery has you looking more seriously at Waco for your own engagement photos, we would love to plan this session with you.
We serve couples throughout DFW and beyond for engagement sessions, proposals, and weddings. We’re entirely comfortable with the 90-minute drive to Waco, the available light conditions inside the Armstrong Browning Library, and the specific requirements of this location. We have made images here and we know what it can produce. And we would love to bring that knowledge to your session.
