THREE TIPS FOR NOVICE PHOTOGRAPHERS

1. Stop Comparing Yourself, Your Skill, and Your Talent.

Comparison is the thief of joy. We are all in completely different stages in our business and skill level. If you take ANYTHING away from this let it be this: do not judge your chapter to someone else’s chapter. Please, do not judge someone’s success based on their social media presence, follower count, or engagement. Focus on your own garden and watering your flowers.

2. Photograph All the Things!

One thing that comes up often in the photography community is the thought that the “riches are in the niches”. Before, you start to leave me some hate mail, I will say I believe wholeheartedly with this statement. HOWEVER as a novice photographer I believe before you really KNOW what niche feeds your soul, you have to photograph all the things. When I first started photography, I started photographing a mix of kids, family, maternity, and couples. As much as I LOVED all my clients and I learned so much about photography I found my passion in couples and weddings.

3. Don’t be Afraid to Be Different & Make Mistakes.

Doubt your doubts. It is okay to think outside the box. Screw the box and think outside of those lines. It is okay to try different poses and ideas. Unconventional marketing strategy? Hell yes. Embrace it. Set yourself apart from the noise. Everyone makes mistakes — established photographers and novice photographers. And, you know what? It is okay. It is human to make mistakes. Learn from them. Set time aside every few months to see what is working for you and what is not. If something isn’t working then fix it.
