Charleston, with its cobblestone streets, pastel-hued houses, and undeniable Southern charm, is a dream destination for any couple seeking a romantic escape. And what better backdrop for an elopement than Charleston? Charleston promises a fairytale elopement experience, and nowhere embodies this magic quite like the iconic Mills House Hotel. Mills House stands as a beacon of elegance, inviting couples into a world of refined romance.
Choosing Charleston for Your Elopement:
Here are a few hidden gems to consider for your elopement ceremony:
Mills House: This iconic , blush-pink landmark offers a canvas of refined elegance for your intimate ceremony or elopement celebration. It offers multiple locations such as the courtyard, the second-floor balcony overlooking Meeting Street, or have a small rooftop soirée beneath the starry sky, the city lights.
Battery Park: This waterfront haven offers stunning vistas of the Charleston Harbor, the perfect backdrop for a seaside vow exchange.
White Point Gardens: Escape the city’s hum and find serenity amidst lush greenery and fragrant magnolias in this historic park.
Morris Island Lighthouse: Secluded and windswept, this iconic lighthouse promises a dramatic and unforgettable elopement experience.
Waterfront Park: Exchange vows amidst the beauty of fountains, gardens, and stunning views of the Charleston Harbor.
Historic Churches: Consider eloping in one of Charleston’s historic churches, such as St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, radiating timeless elegance.
Planning Your Charleston Elopement: Insider Tips
Embrace the off-season: Consider elopement during spring or fall for milder weather and smaller crowds.
Accommodations: The Mills House is an ideal choice, but explore charming B&Bs, Air BnB’s or boutique hotels for a unique experience.
Permits and paperwork: Obtain any necessary permits for your chosen location well in advance.
Keep it intimate: Elopements are all about celebrating your love with a select few. Invite only those closest to you for a truly special experience.
Travel Tips to Experience Charleston’s Charm
One of my favorite parts about being a destination wedding photographer, is being able to immerse myself into the local culture and dine at some amazing restaurants. Charleston is a haven for foodies and adventurers. Indulge in culinary delights at renowned restaurants like Husk, Charleston Grill, or Fig, where Southern flavors burst with creativity, and locally sourced ingredients. Or, Poogan’s Porch to experience classic Lowcountry fare in a historic Victorian house for a romantic dinner. Two of my favorite places I went was Church and Union for dinner and Carmella’s Cafe and Dessert Bar. Also, be sure to grab a drink at the Gin Joint. And, please, whatever you do, do not leave Charleston without going to a Charleston staple — Leon’s Oyster Shop.
Explore the historic Charleston City Market, or get lost in the artistic haven of the French Quarter. For a touch of whimsy, take a carriage ride through the city streets, soaking in the charm of a bygone era. Other places that you should not miss: Rainbow Row, Fort Sumter, and Boone Hall Plantation.
