Some couples walk into a session and tell us the same thing with a nervous laugh: we’re so awkward in front of a camera.
We have heard it hundreds of times. And we have learned, over hundreds of sessions and weddings, that the couples who say it are almost never the ones who mean it. What they usually are — what they almost always turn out to be — is best friends. And best friends are never awkward with each other.
Harrah and Joel told us they were awkward.
Then they got in front of the camera and proved themselves completely wrong.
What we saw instead was two people so deeply at ease with each other that the camera becomes irrelevant. The laughter is real. The glances are unguarded. The way he leans toward her, the way she finds him in a crowd without trying — none of that can be manufactured. It is simply what happens when you have spent years becoming someone’s person.
Harrah and Joel are best friends who happen to be in love. And it shows in every photograph we have ever made with them — from their downtown Dallas engagement session to the most elegant clear tent wedding we have ever had the privilege of documenting.
This wedding is one of our favorites. Full stop.
There are wedding venues that are beautiful. Then there are wedding venues that are storied — that carry history and landscape and a particular quality of light that makes every image feel like it belongs in a different era. Alex Camp House is the second kind.
Located within the grounds of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, this venue sits on the eastern shore of White Rock Lake. Alex Camp House is one of Dallas’s most treasured and intimate wedding settings. The historic home — named for Alex Camp, whose family donated the property to the city — sits on grounds that bloom differently with every season. Mature oaks and curated gardens frame the property. The lake stretches beyond.
As a Dallas wedding photographer who has now documented multiple weddings at this property, I can say with complete honesty: Alex Camp House is one of the most extraordinary venues in the entire city. The intimacy of the historic home, the garden grounds, White Rock Lake backdrop for portraits — all of it works together in a way that feels effortless.
It photographs beautifully in every season. But there is something about a clear tent on these grounds — the way it holds the evening sky and the garden views and the candlelight all at once — that is particularly extraordinary.
For couples still building their Dallas venue shortlist, our Dallas garden venues guide covers Alex Camp House alongside other stunning garden settings across the city. And our Dallas and suburbs wedding venue guide is a great starting point for the full DFW picture.

When we arrived at Alex Camp House on Harrah and Joel’s wedding day, we turned the corner into the reception space and stopped.
The clear tent was already something. But what was inside it — and above it and around it — was another thing entirely.
Whimsical drapery hung from the tent structure in soft, romantic waves. As a result, the clear panels became a frame for something that felt genuinely dreamlike. That drapery transformed what could have been a functional tent into a space that felt designed at every angle — soft and architectural at once
The color palette was a study in contrast and cohesion. White and pearl anchored everything in a clean, romantic elegance. Then maroon arrived — deep, rich, saturated — and changed the entire character of the room. This is the specific power of a well-chosen accent color. The maroon did not fight the white. It deepened it. It gave the softness of the pearl palette something to rest against, something that made every bloom and every detail feel more intentional and more alive.
The florals carried both tones beautifully. Lush, abundant arrangements in cream and white punctuated by the depth of maroon throughout. Against the clear tent panels and the evening sky beyond, the florals created a backdrop that we could not stop photographing from every angle.
This was a design vision executed to perfection. Chic and whimsical and deeply romantic — all at once.

One of the most meaningful things about Harrah and Joel’s visual story is how intentionally their two chapters contrast each other.
Their engagement session — which you can see in full at Harrah + Joel’s downtown Dallas engagement session at Ginger’s Cocktail Bar and The Adolphus — was urban, moody, and electric. Dark speakeasy booths. City architecture. The specific energy of two people who are magnetic together in any setting, captured in the low light of downtown Dallas.
Their wedding was the full counterpoint. The Dallas Arboretum gardens. A clear tent open to the Texas sky. White and pearl and maroon florals. The warmth of a venue that holds its couples in beauty and history and light.
Together, the two sessions tell the complete story of who they are — the city that energizes them and the garden that holds them. Both entirely Harrah and Joel.
This is exactly why we encourage every couple to invest in their engagement session before the wedding day. By the time we arrived at Alex Camp House, we already knew their rhythm. We already knew when to disappear and when to move closer. We already knew what their real laughter looks like. As a result, that knowledge is visible in every single wedding frame.
If Harrah and Joel’s wedding has you looking more closely at Alex Camp House, here is what we want you to know from a photographer’s perspective.
First, Alex Camp House books quickly — and for good reason. It is one of the most sought-after intimate wedding venues in Dallas. Its capacity limits mean dates fill across every season. If the Dallas Arboretum is calling to you, do not wait to tour and inquire.
Finally, plan for portraits throughout the day rather than only during cocktail hour. The White Rock Lake shoreline, the garden paths, the historic home exterior — every direction offers something worth photographing. You will end up with a full visual story instead of a concentrated thirty-minute window.
